Painting

I have been an artist and a scientist all my life.  After receiving my master’s degree in Forest Ecology in 1983, I worked in the woods throughout Oregon.  I incorporated art with my science to produce trail signs and ecology posters, book illustrations and publications, and I create watercolor paintings, fine art prints and cards.

My illustrations take observations of the natural world and translate the details using the language of art.  I choose the line and texture of organic and inorganic forms to create a composition that celebrates some aspect of natural history, up close or at a landscape perspective.  Watercolor is used to focus attention on color, tone or gradients, with pen and ink to emphasize details.  By changing perspective, focus, season and habitat, I have an infinite palette and an unlimited source of inspiration.
