Dave Leibowitz

I've been creating art since the 70’s, bringing over fifty years of fascination with photography, collage and experimental filmmaking to my current practice.

I completed my formal education in 1976 with a bachelor of Fine Arts in Cinema from the University of Bridgeport. During a 40 year career in the motion picture industry, I simultaneously developed my own independent vision as a fine artist, using photography and video to marry the actuality of mechanical image capture with the subjectivity of impressionism and abstraction.

In the 80’s, I served as an official Polaroid SX-70 artist, exhibiting this medium in an annual Soho NYC exhibit for sixteen years. My Polaroid work is represented in the corporate collections of Philip Morris, Polaroid, IBM, Canon, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I transitioned to digital art in 1991, with Photoshop 1.0 and then Painter 1.0, continuing my exploration of the altered or deconstructed photographic image. In the early 90’s, I received multiple creative grants to create experimental art on a supercomputer near Detroit, earning myself a place among the pioneers in computer art.

In 2008, I began making art on a new computing platform, Apple's iPhone and then iPad and using dozens of apps, am now creating art as new as the latest Photo/Art app release. Since I began creating art in this new medium, I have participated in exhibitions of Mobile Digital Art in New York, LA, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington DC, Las Vegas, Austin, Maine, Connecticut, the UK, Italy, Herzegovina and New Zealand.

In 2009, co-developer Andrew Stone and myself, introduced the first gallery iPhone app, iCreated (a predecessor for Instagram) and 2013 saw the publication of my book, Mobile Digital Art-Using the iPad and iPhone as Creative Tools by Focal Press, featuring my work and the work of 70 international painters and photographers.

In 2015, I opened Mobile Digital Art & More, the world’s first brick and mortar gallery dedicated to Mobile art in the art district of Boonton New Jersey.

Living in Talent Oregon, I’m a founding member of the Talent Gallery, a member of Ashland Art Works Gallery, the Crooked Mile Gallery in Phoenix, the Rogue Gallery & Art Center in Medford and the Artist Gardener Gallery in Jacksonville.
